While good hardware and creative software are both key, the controller is what actually connects the player to the game. It’s the third part of the gaming experience trinity.
Depends on if you're looking at the whole world or just America. Nights into dreams came out first in Japan on july 5th, 1996. But the N64 had already come out a couple weeks before. However, Nights would make it to the USA a month before the N64 did (August 31st, 1996 vs. September 29th, 1996). So, Nintendo was first. But Sega made it to America first.
I'd say a part two is necessary. Just looking at Nintendo controllers I can remember a ton that I wanted as a kid but could never afford.
For instance you guys left out the NES Advantage, The NES Four Score, The NES Max which had the same sort of iPod wheel, The NES Zapper, The Power Pad which is an early ancestor of DDR, R.O.B, The NES Satellite, The Power Glove, The Laser Scope and the U-Force. Not to mention Aklaim's IR Wireless NES Controller. The SNES Mouse used with Mario Paint and of course The Super Scope.
You can do an entire 10-min segment on Nintendo controllers alone in my opinion, which I would LOVE to see. Going through all the different prototype and failed releases. To make it more appealing to the general audience, maybe extend it into a piece about accessories, like the Rumble Vest on N64. That thing was a beast.
Controllers failed to be mentioned and of which I think are very important is the Vectrex and lets not forget the technology that inspired the wii, the NES Power Glove. Glad to see Nintendo got it right the second time, another one of those ideas that came out too soon. But the Vectrex having built-in controllers with the small joystick and set of buttons could have easily been an inspiration for many of the controllers that came out later on.
Good call. Yeah, we had a whole thing about the power glove leading to the wii, but we had to cut it. We only have ten minutes, so we can't over a lot of stuff we want to.
I'm surprised you guys didnt cover things like the rockband guitar, duck hunt lightgun, rock band controllers, hell even the mouse + keyboard. I guess you couldnt fit all those into 10 minutes though...
Anyone remember Steel Batllion? That thing had the craziest controller ever.
Have you seen the "probable" PS4 controller?http://www.soygik.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/ps4controller.jpg
If it would be like it it would be hilarious!
For a bit of additional controller history, check this site out. It has a great look at the influences console controllers have had on each other, and covers a pretty wide range of designs.
I loved my Advantage.. Especially the "Turbo" function, which fired repeatedly. The "Slow motion" button was iffy, since all id did was pause the game real fast repeatedly, so it didn't work with every game.
Super Advantage For SHES wasn't as good for some reason.
Also, the NES MAX controller from Nintendo, which some people dug. I thought it sucked. It was a pseudo analog controller, which might have worked if any NES games had analog controls back then.
Great one. Anyone remember the NES Advantage? Back then, I remember thinking it was one of the most ergonomic controller around. And although it was still a digital controller, it still gave that "almost" analog feel in racing games like R.C. Pro-Am...
Nintendo led the way.

Just discovered this video podcast through Tversity... I'm liking what i see so far!
Greatest show on games I've seen to date but you should really make a show about what we all want to see Xbox Vs. Sony
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Sega have the first Analog stick when it released the Nights into Dreams controller?
Here are some of my Game Controllers, sorry but you will have to copy and paste.http://flickr.com/photos/brothercannon/sets/72157606204803385/

yeah, i realize now we're gonna have to do a whole episode on peripherals.
Because that "ps3" controller is just a standard dual analog sony controller.
Why is there an image of a PS3 controller labeled as the Sony dual analog?
I'd never really thought about the controller until I bought a Wii. It's great to see I'm not the only one who thinks about these things.

Hello, I love Michael from Iraq to communicate with you all the love and peace possible if Tatoni About Location
Great show!
And lets not forget the U-Force. Yes it was crap, but it was also way ahead of it's time.
Oh, and why not make it a 2 parter if ten min isn't enough?
I wanted to. I just didn't think anyone else would care about controllers that much besides me. Looks like I was totally wrong!
Yeah you should definitely do a two parter. I was suprised not to hear about the huge xbox controller.

Yeah makes sense, looks like we need a controllers part 2... nah I think you covered what was important ;)
And awesome shoe guys! Didn't mean to be negative, you guys are very thorough.
